A Curable Teenage Problem
Chronic bad breath can affect anyone. Halitosis doesn’t care about your age, sex, status. It’s a common and equal opportunity condition. At some point, we come to realize that we this and just deal with it. Unfortunately, when you are an adolescent bad breath is less a fact of life and more of a personal crisis.
People can lose confidence and self-esteem because of bad breath. This is even more true with adolescents. Teenagers have fragile egos and tender personalities and embarrassing situations can cause a lot of damage. Adolescent bad breath may not be life shattering by itself, but it can create circumstances that cause emotional distress long into the future.
Losing self-esteem at this time of life, where teens are trying to make their mark in this world and trying to build themselves as independent persons, can greatly affect a young person’s future. If they don’t feel confident about themselves at this stage of their life, they may be carrying this burden for years.
At least this is one problem in their young lives that can practically be eliminated. Let your kids know that adolescent bad breath is common and it can easily be cured. Teach them the major causes of bad breath and what to do about it. Teens are notorious for eating all the time and not taking the time for cleaning their teeth afterwards. Their beverages of choice are most likely sodas, juices, energy drinks, and anything but plain old water. Braces are an additional bad breath haven that many adolescents have.
For basic adolescent bad breath, the basic techniques will work just fine, so long as your teenager makes them a habit. Brushing their teeth at least twice a day and flossing – even and especially when wearing braces. Tongue cleaning is another top item. Sure it looks weird, but it works. They should drink lots of water, both to rinse food particles out of their mouths after eating and to keep their mouths moist. And tell them to avoid those sugar and alcohol based mouth washes, breath mints, and sprays. Invest in some top notch, really effective dental products like the ones created by Therabreath and actually use them.
Teenagers have enough to worry about while they’re growing up. Adolescent bad breath needn’t be one of them.
