Even More Worst Home Remedies for Bad Breath

Unbelievable Home Remedies for Bad Breath

The American Academy of Periodontology created a list of the top ten worst home remedies for bad breath back in 2002. Some of these just boggle the mind. Some I have actually heard of.

  • Pierced Tongue Doesn't Cure Bad BreathInfomercial Items. They say to use only items that have the ADA Seal of Approval. Unapproved items could do more harm than good. I'm not so sure about this one. For one, I haven't caught any bad breath infomercials. For another, drinking water throughout the day is a great way to cut down on stinky breath, but I don't see the ADA Seal of Approval on my kitchen faucet.
  • Intestinal cleansing methods. This may be great for cleaning out your system, but internal cleansers really do nothing to cure bad breath. Bad breath originates in the mouth and occasionally, when you've been drinking alcohol, you will get a whiff of alcohol molecules coming from the breath in your lungs.
  • Tongue piercing. I have no idea why this is considered a cure for bad breath. Have you heard anything about this one? I think it's just a dig by the American Academy of Periodontology against tongue jewelry. I can see their point - depending upon the length of the shank on the stud, studies have shown that tongue jewelry will damage either teeth or lead to receding gums. As for curing ?!? bad breath. No. It can increase the chances of bad breath because there are now more places for mouth bacteria to hide.

For a reasonable and reliable home remedy for bad breath, try a tongue scraper, though it might be a bit difficult if you're wearing tongue jewelry.
