Do you have Halitosis Halitophobia

The Serious Side of Halitophobia

News and advancements really aren’t that fast paced in the halitosis world, but I found this yesterday and thought interesting. There seem to be three groups when it comes to people relating to bad breath.

1. Occasional bad breath.
2. Those who due to embarrassment never solve problem and live with halitosis
3. Those who don’t have halitosis but think they do known as halitophobia
The first one is the average person who practices average oral hygiene and occasionally has bad breath. Pretty much 98% of the population fits into this group.

The second is interesting group in that they know they have bad breath but are too embarrassed to seek help. They spend all their time disguising their breath with mouthwash, mints, etc. They have a tendency not to talk directly toward you. Of course, the goal is never to breath in your direction. They hate when you enter their personal zone.

The third group has a phobia concerning halitosis. Halitophobia patients live in fear of having bad breath. They typically don’t have any detectable breath odor. Their phobia usually comes from an experience they had earlier in their lives with someone who had bad breath or they were told at sometime that they had bad breath. This group avoids social activities. As with any phobia, people with halitophobia should seek medical help.

Bet you never thought of psychotherapy as a cure for halitosis. Boy, the exciting World of Bad Breath never ends!

Hi,

I have been dealing with halitophobia for over ten years now, I have tried CBT, Hypnosis and attending social phobia groups which have all helped but not cured my phobia. I have had all the dental and medical checks and am assured there is no reason for any odour within my mouth. Has anybody got any ideas that may help me cure my problem..?
