How to Tell Someone They Have Bad Breath Politely

You Have Stinky Breath

This is an embarrassing situation both for the person with bad breath and for the one who will be telling him or her. A lot of people may find this awkward, and sometimes, it may provoke a fight or hurt feelings. It’s understandable that no one wants to be told that he has bad breath, but if it was me, I would rather know now before everyone else gets a whiff of my breath.

Maybe he or she just had a spicy meal, but otherwise, he or she really has no bad breath problem. No point in getting into an embarrassing situation for a temporary problem.

If it’s regular bad breath, then you’d better just be brave and be an adult. If you’re not really close to the person, you can pass the buck and tell someone who is. Let them deal with the problem. But if it is a close friend, then you should tell them.

Remember not just to blurt it out. Put yourself in their shoes. Mention that you also have had that problem, even if you haven’t. Also, before you approach him or her, have some suggestions ready to offer them. Tell them about flossing, tongue cleaning and the Therabreath products.

Some people may have a different reaction when told they have bad breath, but if you do it gently and in a polite manner ("Man, your breath would kill an ox!" isn’t good), your friend ought to thank you for your efforts and, with any luck, still think of you as a friend.
