Teeth Whitening – What You Should Know

In this day and age, how we look tends to be one of the most important things that we worry about. With constant media attention given to the perfect body and the perfect look, it can often be difficult to feel good about yourself if you do not fit in with that perfect stereotype.

There are many obvious ways in which you can change your body and your appearance to suit the current trend. These include changing your hairstyle, using different types of make-up and even drastically changing your look by undergoing cosmetic surgery. However, one thing which you may not have thought of which could dramatically help to improve your confidence is teeth whitening.

What is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is a procedure carried out by your dentist that will change the color of your teeth. You can usually choose how dramatic you want that change to be, though your dentist will give you a clear indication of the results that you can expect. Also, the change will not always be what you were expecting and you may need to repeat the procedure several times to get the results that you want.

There are different ways of whitening the teeth, but usually bleaching is the most effective method. This includes a gel “shield” being placed in your mouth to protect the gums while the bleaching is carried out. You will then have what looks like a gum shield inserted into your mouth which contains the whitening product. You will find that the main active ingredient within the whitening product is usually hydrogen peroxide and it allows oxygen to get onto the tooth enamel which will then whiten the teeth.

The process is not carried out in one single appointment; it is likely that you will need to visit your dentist two or three times and then treatment will be continued by yourself at home. The visits include applying the bleach again as the dentist did in your first appointment. You will then be given the whitening product to apply, as directed by your dentist, at home for the next few weeks. If you opt for slightly newer treatments then it is possible that you could see results after one week. However, most teeth whitening procedures will take a few weeks to provide you with noticeable results.

If bleaching does not appeal to you then you could always choose another teeth whitening method such as laser whitening. If you choose this option then the whitening product will be applied to the teeth and a laser will then be shone onto the solution to activate the ingredients. This is the preferred option for many people as the results do tend to be a lot quicker. You will also find that laser whitening provides brighter results and you can achieve a look that is up to six times lighter than your current color.

Generally each different treatment will vary in price. If you do not have a lot of money to spare then there are cheaper alternatives available. If you are concerned about the price then it may be a good idea to talk to your dentist. They will be able to give you a full list of options. Or you could try store bought whitening products?
