Acid Reflux and Bad Breath: A Terrible Combination

by Mike

Commonly, bad breath is caused by bacteria that are found in our mouths. But there are other things that can cause bad breath.  One of these conditions is acid reflux.

Unfortunately, acid reflux is another common health problem that affects thousands of Americans today. This is a digestion problem which causes the content of the stomach or the gases inside it to re-enter the esophagus. This condition can be very painful and one of the results is bad breath.

Bad breath caused by bacteria and acid reflux differ. Their actual causes are different as well as the smell they produce. They do share some certain similarities though. This includes the link with certain foods as a factor.

Stopping acid reflux and the bad breath that comes with it will require you to avoid eating certain types of food. In this instance, it isn’t that these foods cause bad breath, but that there appears to be a connection with certain foods that help aggravate the acid reflux reaction.  Some foods that you should consider limiting or avoiding are chocolates, fried and fatty foods, drinking alcohol and caffeinated drinks, and any dishes and drinks with tomatoes as an ingredient.

However, keep in mind the bigger picture.  When you have acid reflux, your bad breath should not be your biggest concern. Consult your doctor, follow his or her instructions, and say goodbye to the effects of acid reflux and to your bad breath as well.
