Sugar Free Aspartame Doesn’t Mean Bad Breath Free
Recently, there has been much ballyhoo about aspartame. Studies made have shown that this widely used artificial sweetener can pose a lot of danger to our health. Aspartame has been linked to cancer, obesity, blindness, headaches, insanity, seizure. What’s important to us here is the recent link between aspartame and bad breath.
Aspartame is a main ingredient of many products sold today that claim to be sugar-free. It is used for gums, mints and soft drinks. Ironically, the same “mint” or “gum” you are using today to mask bad breath may also be causing it.
One of the connections between aspartame and bad breath is the components of aspartame: protein and alcohol. These ingredients are two that create an ideal habitat for the bacteria which cause bad breath.
Protein is the food that provides nourishment for the anaerobic bacteria. As more “food” is introduced to the system, the more the bacteria will flourish. Alcohol on the other hand dries out the mouth making it suitable for bacteria infestation.
Aspartame and bad breath are a losing combination. Be sure to avoid products that contain this harmful ingredient. Meanwhile, maintain your regular oral hygiene routine of brushing, flossing, tongue cleaning and using reliable oral hygiene products that oxygenate your mouth.
