Teenage Braces and Bad Breath

by Beth

Help!  My Teenager Has Bad Breath!

No Braces and Bad Breath for MeHere’s a problem that I’m really familiar with.  No, I haven’t been a teenager for a few decades, but I’m wearing braces on my teeth right now.  Wow, talk about a halitosis trap!  The main problem with having braces is that it makes oral hygiene more difficult and time consuming.   If you don’t brush and floss regularly, you’ll get all sorts of nasty food and plaque build-up under your wires and around your teeth.  One of the very worst – and I do mean worst – bad breath catchers is the wax you put on to keep wires and brackets from scratching the inside of your mouth.  Wear some of that overnight, take it off in the morning, and be prepared to kill an ox with that dose of morning mouth.  Yuck!!

If you brush faithfully, you’ll go through toothbrushes at a phenomenal rate.   And flossing is really important.   You can use either  those dental floss products that are made especially for braces- effective, but really time consuming.  Or you can go for a really cool tool like the Hydrofloss.  It’s an oral irrigator, like a water pick, but it actually adds some sort of magnetic technology that is even better for getting rid of plaque.  Your whole family can use this, braces or not.  But be prepared – for the first few tries you’ll have water squirting everywhere!

It’s bad enough to have bad breath with braces when you’re a teenager, but it is just really awful if you’re almost 60!  So remember, it’s very important to use top notch products with the latest ingredients to help make up for any failing in oral hygiene.  I use both the Hydrofloss and Dr. Katz’s TheraBreath products and they work just great.
