Bad Breath Cures — Hydrogen Peroxide…Oh my
I grew up in a home where hydrogen peroxide was used to treat wounds. Its antiseptic capabilities were used to fend off infections and to allow the wound to heal faster. Now how can it possibly be used to treat bad breath? It’s not like bad breath is caused by sores inside our mouth.
First off, we need to understand that bad breath is caused by anaerobic bacteria that reside in our mouth. We all have these bacteria and it is normal to have them. But without proper oral care these bacteria may grow out of proportion and thus cause bad breath.
What happens is that these bacteria feast on the food particles left in our mouth because we have not been able to sufficiently clean it. After the bacteria has processed the food particles, they will then release sulfur compounds which then becomes gaseous and mixes with the air inside our mouth.
It isn’t the antiseptic capability hydrogen peroxide has that I mentioned earlier that makes it efficient in eliminating bad breath. Mainly, hydrogen peroxide helps in fending off bad breath because helps by adding more oxygen inside our mouth.
Anaerobic bacteria have trouble surviving in environments where a high concentration of oxygen is found. By reducing the number of bacteria existing inside your mouth, the volume of sulfur compound being released is lowered as well.
Remember though to use only hydrogen peroxide products with less than 1.5% of concentration. Anything higher can destroy the enamel of your teeth and can lead to tooth decay.
