Infected Tonsils Can Create Halitosis
Bad breath is normally related to bad oral hygiene which results to cavities, rotten teeth and most especially to the growth of anaerobic bacteria that produces sulfur compounds which in turn produces the rotten egg smell normally associated with bad breath. But did you know that having an infected tonsil can provide bad breath as well?
Bad breath due to an infected tonsils or tonsillitis is extremely different from the normal causes of bad breath. They have a different smell and eliminating it would require medical attention and antibiotics.
What happens is that the tonsil becomes infected with the bacteria known as Streptococcus pyogenes and causes the tonsil to become inflamed. Then, the tonsillar crypts develop pus pockets where the odor emanates from. These pockets of pus are also what cause the pain usually felt with tonsillitis.
If you do have tonsillitis then having bad breath is the least of your problems. When your tonsillitis is gone, then your bad breath will also go away. But with tonsillitis, what you need to consider is the seriousness of the infection and the occurrence of rheumatic fever, which can greatly affect your heart.
Although tonsillitis may be cured by our body’s immune system in time, using antibiotics will help heal it faster and prevent any complications in other parts of our body.
So if you think that your bad breath is getting worse and the pain felt is getting worse as well, consult your doctor immediately.
