Herbs – The Holistic Approach to Fighting Bad Breath

Since time immemorial, herbs have been used to treat a variety of diseases and conditions. Just looking around your kitchen and you can find numerous regular items which, either eaten or drunk like tea, would provide a good choice as an alternative to commercial products.  One of those conditions that herbs can effectively treat is halitosis.

Herbs to Fight Bad BreathSome of the more popular herbs to fight halitosis are parsley, eucalyptus, licorice root, coriander, tarragon, rosemary, Echinacea and numerous others can either be eaten or boiled and drunk like tea. The oils of some herbs are also used.

Some of them are even anti-bacterial, killing or reducing the number of anaerobic bacteria in the mouth, which release sulfur when they process the food left inside the mouth. Some are also naturally anti-inflammatory which helps with pain and reducing places where plaque can develop. Toothpaste manufacturers often use some of these herbs in their products to help increase their effectiveness.  Certain herbs actually promote the circulation inside the mouth, tightening the gums and also removing plaque from the teeth, gums and coating from the tongue.

It is essential that you know the amount to be brewed, chewed, or ingested, as some herbs may have a toxic effect if you use too much. Be sure to read up on your herbs or consult with an herbalist when using herbs for any health issue.  To read about individual herbs, see our Herbs for Bad Breath articles.
