Understanding Laser Tooth Whitening

Laser tooth whitening is one of the light activation methods available for whitening your teeth. It is very effective and it is expensive. How does it work and what can you expect?

What is Laser Teeth Whitening?

Laser tooth whitening is a procedure carried out by a qualified dentist. It uses a laser to activate the whitening process. Whitening gel is placed onto the teeth and a laser beam is then shone onto the gel to activate the bleaching ingredients. Once activated, the whitening process will begin.

One of the main advantages to laser tooth whitening is that the results are quicker than with the ordinary bleaching procedure - you can see that your teeth are whiter with a single appointment. This is because the light speeds up the process. With ordinary bleaching with trays, results are usually apparent after a few days or even weeks.

There are other whitening treatments that use light but not laser lights to activate the bleaching ingredients. Zoom and BriteSmile are two of these other treatments.

How Long Does Laser Whitening Take?

How long it takes to get whiter teeth depends on two things: where you get the procedure done, and it will also depend upon the condition of your teeth. If you only need to go a few shades lighter then it will typically take around 30 minutes to an hour. However, more drastic results can take up to 90 minutes.

Some dentists will perform the laser tooth whitening in one office visit. The treatment is split into smaller time frames. These are usually within the one office visit. If you have very stained teeth, you may have to go back to the dentist a few times. Each dentist will do things differently and so you may want to look around to find the right timeframe to suit you.

What Results Can You Expect from Laser Bleaching?

Results vary between people, but usually you can go up to six times lighter than your current tooth color. There are some dentists who will promise you results of up to 14 shades lighter but it is extremely rare that you will notice such drastic results. In fact, the overly white teeth that you may see on some celebrities are not even attractive. Typically with laser whitening you should expect to see results of up to six times lighter and nothing more. Your dentist will be able to tell you what kind of results to expect.

Overall laser tooth whitening can dramatically help you to achieve whiter, brighter teeth. How long the results last is up to how porous your teeth are, whether you limit your intake of tea, wine, and coffee or not, and how regular you are with flossing and brushing. You may maintain your bright smile for a few months or longer than a year. If you do change your lifestyle then you are looking at results that will last around two years. These treatments are expensive but the costs vary widely. The cost of treatment depend upon where you have the treatment done and how long it will take.
