When choosing a tooth whitening system you have two main choices.

Either you can use a system performed by your dentist, or you can use a home kit. There are toothpastes, home bleaching kits and whitening strips that you can purchase to do it yourself.  However, even with the most popular products such as Opalescence whitening toothpaste, you are not always guaranteed results. That is why many people prefer to use professional tooth whitening systems.

Professional Tooth Whitening Systems

One of the more successful whitening systems is laser whitening. This involves the dentist placing a bleaching gel onto the teeth and then shining a laser beam onto the gel to activate the ingredients. You can have tooth and or gum sensitivity for a few days after the procedure, and there is some debate about whether the heat from the laser can cause some damage to your teeth. The results are fast with this technique. Though it is expensive, it is usually less expensive than Zoom whitening or BriteSmile.

If money is no object then you should look into the Zoom or BriteSmile systems. Performed by many dentists, they are advanced technologies which give you results within one hour. These techniques are performed in your dentist's office. They also use a gel that is activated by light, but unlike laser whitening, these use a different type of light that won't heat your teeth. These whitening systems take about an hour and are perfect if you are attending a special occasion or a last minute event.

Home Tooth Whitening Systems

If you are on a fairly low budget or don't care about having exceptionally white teeth, then you can use whitening toothpastes or should look into home kits.

These days it is difficult to buy a toothpaste that doesn't have whitening ingredients added to it. If you use them with an electric toothbrush like the Sonicare, you will have very good results. Limit your tea, coffee, and red wine drinking and your teeth will look even better. To really reduce stains, do a baking powder brushing once a week.

Whitening toothpastes can work but generally the bleaching kits are much better. You can purchase home kits from both drugstores and from your dentist. Obviously if you can afford to it would be better to purchase a kit from your dentist because that way you know that the ingredients will be of stronger concentrations and good quality so the results are usually better than over the counter home kits. Home kits consist of a whitening tray that you configure to the shape of your bite. You place whitening gel in the tray and fit it onto your teeth for a specified time. You will need several applications. The trays are reusable and most brands have gel refills available. Success depends on how well you follow the directions and the number of applications of the gel.

Overall the best tooth whitening system is usually provided by your dentist. Whitening toothpastes and home kits can be effective, especially, if the staining is mild. For more severe staining and discoloration, you should to look into professional tooth whitening systems.
